Dewatering of POME digestate using lignosulfonate driven forward osmosis

Abstract:  Lignosulfonates investigated as draw solutes for de-watering of POME Digestate  Na Lignosulfonate had higher water flux than Ca lignosulfonate draw solution  Na Lignosulfonate showed lower reverse solute flux than Ca lignosulfonate or NaCl solutions  Osmotic pressures of solutions directly measured by dead-end filtration method

“…PR for An-POME as the feed was determined by using an osmotic pressure of 1.58 bar for An-POME, established by Johnson et al [ 35 ], for theoretical water flux (J Wt ) estimation. The PR trends for An-POME as feed were opposite those of the PR for DI water as feed.…”

“…This fertilizer driven forward osmosis (FDFO) could also avoid the energy requirements associated with the DS separation. The potential of FDFO has been explored to recover water from palm oil mill effluent (POME) wastewater, 108 petrochemical oily wastewater, 109 shale gas flowback and produced water (Sichuan Basin, China), 110 vegetable waste liquor, 111 and bioreactor treating domestic wastewater. 112 The details of the fertilizers used, membrane performance and water recovery are given in Table 5.…”

“…130 The use of lignosulfonates (Na/Ca) as DS gave a pronounced advantage as the diluted draw solution could be used for irrigation to enhance soil stability and control soil erosion. 108 Other organic DS such as potassium acetate, potassium formate, sodium glycolate, and sodium propionate has also been evaluated in lab studies. 131 Commercial aquaporin incorporated TFC (FO) membranes could suitably recover water from hot saline oily-wastewater (Petrochemical area, Iran) with a maximum flux of ∼68 LMH using 3 M KCl and operated in the PRO mode.…”
