Devonian plants from Colombia, with discussion of their geological and palaeogeographical context

Abstract: -Plant fossils are described from the Cuche Formation, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia in the area of Floresta. Those identified as Colpodexylon cf. deatsii Banks and cf. Archaeopteris sp. suggest an earliest Late Devonian (Frasnian) age for the formation. These or similar taxa are also found in

“…Although not as well documented as that from Laurussia, the record of archaeopterids from the Late Devonian of Gondwana is not insignificant, with reports of compressed leafy branches and permineralized wood from Africa (Anderson et al 1995;Meyer-Berthaud et al 2000, 2004, South America (Berry et al 2000) and Australia. In Australia, the presence of Archaeopteris has been recorded from several localities of Late Devonian age from Victoria (Talent et al 2000).…”

“…Isolated exposures of granite in the Colombian Eastern Cordillera record a Cambrian-Ordovician magmatic event and inheritance of Mesoproterozoic zircons (Horton et al, 2010b). Devonian-Carboniferous strata in the Eastern Cordillera may have been deposited as the result of upper-crustal deformation (Janvier and Villarroel, 1998;Berry et al, 2000;Janvier and Villarroel, 2000;Cediel et al, 2003;Kammer and Sanchez, 2006). However, on May 25, 2012 gsabulletin.gsapubs.org Downloaded from the majority of these strata lack post-Silurian zircons (Horton et al, 2010b), indicating a paucity of crustal magmatism associated with this hypoth esized orogenic event.…”
