Device for Improving Quantification of Reading Acuity and Reading Speed

Abstract: The SRD seems to be a valid and reliable device for testing reading acuity at the best reading distance in an experimental setup as well as in clinical use in presbyopic patients. The SRD may be used whenever a detailed comparison of different methods for correcting presbyopia is required.

“…Reading performance is evaluated on an individual basis by allowing patients to use their subjectively convenient reading distance. 12,14,[19][20][21][22] Depth of focus, defined as the distance in front of and beyond the object of regard that appears to be in focus, is the optical principle used by the inlay. This principle is commonly used in photography and is controlled by the f -number (aperture stop).…”

“…Being able to accomplish different types of everyday reading tasks (eg, reading books and newspaper, reading computer screen, reading numbers on mobile phone) without reading glasses postoperatively is the goal of presbyopic patients who have treatment. 12,14,[19][20][21][22] The Salzburg Reading Desk assesses the efficacy of presbyopic surgical treatments. Reading performance is evaluated on an individual basis by allowing patients to use their subjectively convenient reading distance.…”

“…Developed for standardized testing of reading acuity and reading speed at any reading distance using different log-scaled reading charts, 6-8 the system offers computerized testing under strictly defined conditions while simulating a natural reading process. [6][7][8][9] The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of bilateral implantation of 5 currently available IOL models (4 multifocal and 1 monofocal) in improving different aspects of reading performance. In particular, we used the Salzburg Reading Desk to assess uncorrected and corrected bilateral reading acuity, reading distance, the mean and maximum reading speeds, and the smallest log-scaled print size patients could effectively read; the minimum follow-up was 1 year.…”
