Developmental Stages in Human Embryos: Revised and New Measurements

Abstract: The staging of human embryos, as distinct from seriation, depends on a morphological scheme devised by Streeter and completed by O’Rahilly, who proposed the term Carnegie stages. To avoid misconceptions and errors, and to place new findings in perspective, it is necessary to summarize the essentials of the Carnegie system: (1) Twenty-three stages cover the embryonic period, i. e. the first 8 postfertilizational weeks of development. (2) The system is based on internal as well as external features, and the use … Show more

“…In the fetuses, GL ranged from 33 to 150 mm (weeks 9-17 of development). The parameters used to determine the post-conception age were the GL and external and internal criteria (O'Rahilly and M€ uller, 2010). All specimens were obtained from ectopic pregnancies or spontaneous abortions, and no part of the material gave indications of possible malformation.…”

“…We examined the paraffin-embedded histology of 25 midterm embryos and fetuses at 6-9 weeks of gestation (greatest length or GL, 12.5-36 mm). The parameters used to determine the postconception age were the GL and external and internal criteria (O'Rahilly and Mü ller, 2010). The present paraffin blocks contained entire parts of the neck and thorax.…”

“…The chondrification of the odontoid starts from the base in stage 21 (51 days after fertilization). 11,12 The odontoid ossification begins at the base from 2 ossification centers that fuse in the midline by the seventh gestational month. The terminal portion of odontoid arises from the proatlas (the fourth occipital sclerotome).…”
