Developmental morphology of the solum nasi in the mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus)

Abstract: The solum nasi of Microcebus murinus is characterized by the presence of a zona annularis, continuity between the anterior transverse lamina and the paraseptal cartilage, a continuous paraseptal cartilage, a palatine cartilage and a posterior transverse lamina. It lacks a fibula reuniens and possibly a cartilage of the nasopalatine duct as well as a palatine papillary cartilage. The morphology in M. murinus closely resembles that seen in Tupaia and Galago. This affinity results from the retention of primitive … Show more

“…Constant shading is applied routinely when simple verification is needed for specific anatomical features or structural outlines. However, Phong shading is used to render surfaces when detailed morphological analysis is desired (Lozanoff and Diewert, 1989;Lozanoff, 1990). As well, a stereo pair shaded with the Phong routine renders even greater depth to the three-dimensional model and provides striking relief for its surface.…”

“…Embryonic and fetal Microcebus specimens of the Bluntschli collection were studied at the American Museum of Natural History (Lozanoff and Diewert, 1989;Shimp et al, 2003). This collection included data cards with measures such as ''total overall length,'' which was roughly equivalent to crown-rump length (CRL) based on archived photographs of embryos/fetuses.…”

“…A variety of staining procedures were used, including Azan blue, hematoxylin-eosin, Gomori trichrome, Mallory's trichrome, and Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff. The details of preparation for serial sectioning were previously published (Lozanoff and Diewert, 1989;Shimp et al, 2003;Smith et al, 2004).…”
