Developmental Links Between Trajectories of Physical Violence, Vandalism, Theft, and Alcohol-Drug Use from Childhood to Adolescence

Abstract: Differences in developmental trajectories of physical violence, vandalism, theft, and alcohol-drug use from ages 10 to 15 were studied. All trajectories of physical violence decreased. Children who engaged in the high trajectories of vandalism, theft, and alcohol-drug use had a high probability of also being high in physical vi… Show more

“…Of note, although the majority of studies collapse all CD behaviors together [Tremblay, 2010], factor analytic [Tackett et al, 2005], genetically informed Burt, 2009a,b;Monuteaux et al, 2009], and longitudinal phenotype [Bongers et al, 2004;Craig et al, 2002;Lacourse et al, 2002;Loeber et al, 2000;van Lier et al, 2009] studies support a distinction between aggressive and non aggressive CD behaviors.…”

“…During childhood, antisocial behavior is most often characterized by acts of physical aggression and defiance (Côté, Vaillancourt, Barker, Nagin, & Tremblay, 2007; Tremblay, 2010). During the transition into adolescence, however, aggressive symptoms become less and less frequent (Broidy et al, 2003; Stranger, Achenbach, & Verhulst, 1997; Tremblay, 2003; van Lier, Vitaro, Barker, Koot, & Tremblay, 2009; Verhulst & van der Ende, 1995). In contrast, non-aggressive antisocial behaviors increase dramatically during mid-adolescence (Barker et al, 2007; Bongers, Koot, van der Ende, & Verhulst, 2004; Moffitt, 1993; Stranger et al, 1997; van Lier et al, 2009).…”
