Developmental Considerations for Assessment and Treatment of Impulsivity in Older Adults

Abstract: Impulsivity is an important factor in many clinical disorders, especially alcohol and substance use disorders. Most of the research on impulsivity in this domain has focused on adolescence and young adulthood, as this developmental period is characterized by onset of and escalation in alcohol and substance use, likely driven in part by brain development patterns. Although many individuals eventually "mature out" of these behaviors in middle adulthood, a critical subset of people do not. The role of impulsivity… Show more

“…Although impulsivity trait is relatively stable over time, in our study it was preferred to assess impulsivity trait as a time-varying variable rather than solely at baseline in order to account for possible minimal variability, as for example impulsivity has been seen to change with increasing age and other factors [ 14 ], as well as to give more robustness to the analyses assessing impulsivity trait in more than one time-point.…”

“…Impulsivity is defined as “a predisposition toward rapid unplanned reactions to internal or external stimuli without regard to the negative consequences of these reactions to the impulsive individuals or to others” [ 12 ]. Impulsivity can affect different aspects of a persons’ life and may be determined by both the genetic background and an individuals’ development [ 13 , 14 ]. Impulsivity predisposes individuals to respond to their emotional urges, to lack premeditation and planning, and have sensation seeking [ 15 ].…”

“…As evidenced by discrepancies in the literature between adolescent and emerging adult impulsivity-substance use findings (cf. Coskunpinar et al, 2013;Stautz & Cooper, 2013), the current findings indicate that impulsivity-substance use associations, drawn largely from developmentally distinct college student samples, may not consistently generalize to older, contextually distinct populations (Liu et al, 2020). Indeed, military veterans not only vary in their sociodemographic composition (cf.…”

“…Although most studies on impulsivity are focussed on adolescence and early adulthood [e.g., 57, 58, 60, 61], impulsivity has also been shown to be important for various aspects of individuals' functioning in later developmental stages, including late adulthood. At the same time, the role of impulsivity may change during a life course [e.g., [62][63][64][65][66]. Therefore, the relationship between impulsivity and the use of SOC strategies may also change with age.…”
