The use of fentanyl during pregnancy, whether by prescription or illicit use, may result in high blood levels that pose an early risk to fetal development. However, little is known regarding the neurotoxicity that might arise from excessive fentanyl exposure in growing organisms, particularly drug-related withdrawal symptoms. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to fentanyl solutions (0.1, 1, and 5 mg/L) for 5 days post fertilization (dpf), followed by a 5-day recovery period, and then the larvae were evaluated for photomotor response, anxiety behavior, shoaling behavior, aggression, social preference, and sensitization behavior. Fentanyl solutions at 1 and 5 mg/L induced elevated anxiety, decreased social preference and aggressiveness, and behavioral sensitization in zebrafish larvae. The expression of genes revealed that embryonic exposure to fentanyl caused substantial alterations in neural activity (bdnf, c-fos) and neuronal development and plasticity (npas4a, egr1, btg2, ier2a, vgf). These results suggest that fentanyl exposure during embryonic development is neurotoxic, highlighting the importance of zebrafish as an aquatic species in research on the neurobehavioral effects of opioids in vertebrates.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of public service motivation, self-efficacy, and competency directly and indirectly through intervening variables on the State Civil Apparatus (ASN) performance. A good understanding of the factors that affect ASN performance is crucial in ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the quality of public services provided to the community. The approach used was quantitative, using a questionnaire as a data collection instrument. The research population was ASN, who work in six Regional Offices that generate Original Local Government Revenue (PAD) throughout the Regional Government of South Sumatra Province, totalling 438 people. The total sample was taken using a Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling design, and data collection was done using the Slovin formula. The degree of error is 5% => e = 0.05 for 209 people. Data analysis was performed using SEM Lisrel 8.80, a combination of path and factor analysis used to examine the complexity of the relationships between variables assessed statistically. The results of the study showed that public service motivation, self- efficacy, and competency have a significant positive effect on ASN performance. The higher the public service motivation, self-efficacy, and competency possessed by ASN, the higher, more effective, and efficient their overall performance will be. The findings of this study make an important contribution to increasing our understanding of the factors that affect ASN performance. The environmental impacts of nanoparticle mixtures in the aquatic environment is not well understood. The purpose of this study examined the sub-lethal toxicity of low concentrations (ug/L range) of selected nanoparticles alone and in mixtures in juvenile trout. Fish were exposed to to individual and two environmentally relevant mixtures of silver (nAg), copper oxide (nCuO) and cerium oxide (nCeO) nanoparticles for 96 h at 15 °C. After the exposure period, fish were depurated overnight and tissue levels in Ag, Ce, Cu and Zn were determined along with a suite of effects biomarkers such as oxidative stress/inflammation, denatured protein tagging (ubiquitin), DNA strand breaks (genotoxicity) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The data showed that these nanoparticles behaved as suspended matter but were nevertheless bioavailable for fish with bioconcentration factors of 6, 8 and 2 for nAg, nCeO and nCuO respectively. Only nCuO alone increased malonaldehyde (lipid peroxidation) contents but all nanoparticles increased DNA damage, protein-ubiquitin labeling, and decreased AChE activity. Globally, the toxicity of nCeO and nCuO was generally stronger than nAg, and antagonist effects were found in the mixtures. The interactions involved in these antagonisms are not well understood but do not involve the liberation of free ions and labile zinc in tissues. In conclusion, the bioavailability and toxicity of these nanoparticles are influenced by mixtures of nanoparticles, which is likely to occur in contaminated environments.
