“…One study has examined the relationship between parental behaviors and child AS [36], reporting that childhood exposure to parental behaviors classified as threatening, hostile, and rejecting was significantly predictive of later AS. Specifically, Scher and Stein [36] reported that parental rejection/aggression/hostility scores accounted for 6.7% of variance in offspring AS.…”

“…Specifically, Scher and Stein [36] reported that parental rejection/aggression/hostility scores accounted for 6.7% of variance in offspring AS. Of the three parental behaviors examined, parental threatening behavior best predicted child AS, accounting for 6.6% of its variance and remaining a significant predictor of child AS when parental hostility and rejection were controlled for.…”

“…Hazen et al (1996), in a study with adults, found that anxiety sensitivity could be lowered using cognitive behavioral methods such as providing psychoeducation about anxiety, cognitive restructuring, and introceptive exposures and in-vivo exposures. In addition, several studies found parental behaviors such as parent hostility, threats, rejecting behaviors, and parental reinforcement of sick-role behavior in their children played a contributory role in the development of anxiety sensitivity (Cohan et al 2004;Scher and Stein 2003;Watt et al 1998). This information is not to be used to blame parents, but suggests potential avenues for intervention with parents exhibiting these behaviors, while co-jointly treating the child.…”

“…Twin research has shown that variation in AS (particularly the physical concerns aspect of AS) is explained by unique (as opposed to shared) environmental and additive genetic influences (Stein et al, 1999). Emotional maltreatment in childhoodFparticularly when it includes parental threatening, hostile, and rejecting behaviorsFis associated with higher levels of AS in young adults (Scher and Stein, 2003). Thus, childhood emotional maltreatment is a plausible candidate to be an environmental risk factor for AS.…”
