Development Status and Key Technologies of Plant Protection UAVs in China: A Review

Abstract: Plant protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play a crucial role in agricultural aviation services. In recent years, plant protection UAVs, which improve the accuracy and eco-friendliness of agricultural techniques, have been used to overcome the shortcomings of traditional agricultural operations. First, this paper introduces the development scale, main types, and operation scenarios of China’s plant protection UAVs. Subsequently, the key technologies of plant protection UAVs, such as precision autonomous… Show more

“…This matter caused the height of spraying to be slightly different among the palms. According to Hu et al, (2022), some features to consider in a drone sprayer include obstacle avoidance and terrain-following control technology. These technologies aim to improve the safety, reliability, and intelligence of drone operations as well as to maintain the crop canopy's relative height steady [8].…”

Preparation to install the RTK base to connect to the drone slightly taking a long time (10 -30 minutes) and the signal depends on the weather and geographical conditions.…”

“…25,26 In recent years, with the intensification of land development, increase in labor costs, and progress of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, UAVs have been rapidly developed as an efficient method for plant protection. [27][28][29] Compared with conventional spraying, UAVs have faster flight speed (3-7 m s −1 ), higher application altitude (≥1.5 m), and smaller droplet sizes and distributions, so the spray droplets are easier to evaporate and drift. Additionally, the dilution ratios of pesticide formulations used in UAV plant protection are far (≤50-fold) lower than those of conventional sprays, 30,31 so higher requirements have been proposed for the pesticide formulations.…”

“…At present, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are primarily used for data gathering, remote sensing, and observation tasks in a variety of sectors, such as photography, logistics, telecommunications, agriculture, search and rescue, disaster management, infrastructure inspection, and entertainment [1][2][3][4][5][6]. They can provide safe operation in dangerous environments and enable access to remote locations, normally at low cost.…”
