Summary. Oviduct and uterine cell cultures were prepared from mice at different days of pseudopregnancy and their effects on the development of 1-and 8-cell mouse embryos in co-culture were examined. One-cell mouse embryos in co-culture with oviduct cells from 20 h to 120 h after hCG had a mean (\m=+-\s.e.) cell number of 70\m=.\1\ m=+-\ 3\ m=. \ 6, significantly (P < 0\m=.\001)higher compared with those cultured in Whittingham's T6 medium supplemented with 5% fetal calf serum (T6 + 5% FCS) (30\m=.\4 \m=+-\ 1\m=.\6). Transfer of embryos, at 96 h after hCG, to synchronous pseudopregnant recipients showed that more embryos in oviduct co-culture formed fetuses than those cultured in T6 + 5% FCS. Co-culture of 1-cell embryos with uterine cells did not confer an advantage in cell numbers over T6 + 5% FCS. However, more 8-cell embryos formed blastocyst outgrowths after 100 h in co-culture with uterine cells prepared from mice at Day 3 of pseudopregnancy than with uterine cultures prepared from mice at Day 1 of pseudopregnancy or oviduct cells. In addition, there was further improvement when the Day 3 uterine co-cultures were supplemented with 1 or 10 ng progesterone/ml.These results highlight the importance of the oviduct and uterine cells during the different stages of preimplantation embryo development.

ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ. Η ανάπτυξη της βιοτεχνολογίας έχει ανοίξει νέους ορίζοντες οτον χρόπο διαχείρισης και εκτροφής των αγροτικών ζώ ων. Σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας είναι μια αδρή παρουσίαση των νέων βιοτεχνολογικών επεμβάσεων που βρίσκουν εφαρμογή στο κουνέλι. Μετά την αξιολόγηση της σημασίας του κουνελιού στην επιστημονική έρευνα, περιγράφονται τα στάδια και οι μέθο δοι μεταφοράς εμβρύων σε αυτό, καθώς και διάφορες πειραματι κές μελέτες για τη σύγκριση των εκάστοτε χρησιμοποιουμένων μεθόδων. Ακολουθεί συνοπτική περιγραφή της in vitro γονιμο ποίησης, τεχνικής που μπορεί να συνδυαστεί με τη μεταφορά εμ βρύων. Η παραγωγή διαγονιδιακών ζώων περιλαμβάνει τη μετα φορά εμβρύων ως ενδιάμεσο στάδιο. Έτσι, παρουσιάζονται όλα τα στάδια της τεχνικής, ενώ γίνεται αναφορά σε μελέτες παραγωγής διαγονιδιακών κουνελιών.Λέξεις ευρετηρίασης: κουνέλι, μεταφορά εμβρύων, διαγονιδιακά ΕΙΣΑΓΩΓΗ Η αξιοποίηση του κουνελιού (Oryctolagus cuniculus) παρουσιάζει διπλό ενδιαφέρον ως παραγωγικό και ως ζώο του εργαστηρίου χάρη στο μικρό του μέγεθος, την τα-χυαυξητική του ικανότητα, το χαμηλό κόστος διατροφής του, την εύκολη διαχείριση, την προσαρμοστικότητα του στις τεχνητές συνθήκες εκτροφής, την πολυδυμια και το σύντομο αναπαραγωγικό του κΰκλο (McNitt et al., 1996).Ως παραγωγικό ζώο αξιοποιείται για την παραγωγή κρέατος, γούνας και μαλλιού. Στα πλαίσια των ζωοτεχνι κών επεμβάσεων που τροποποιούν τις αποδόσεις στο κου νέλι, όπως και σε άλλα είδη ζώων (χοίρος, μηρυκαστικά), εφαρμόζεται μεταφορά εμβρύων, in vitro γονιμοποίηση και μεταφορά γονίδιων (Milan et al., 2000).Ως πειραματόζωο και πρότυπο μελέτης νοσημάτων για τον άνθρωπο χρησιμοποιείται για την παραγωγή αντι σωμάτων και θεραπευτικών ανασυνδυασμένων πρωτεϊ νών (Fan et al., 1999, Bozse et al., 2003 ABSTRACT. The advance of biotechnology has created new methods in breeding farm animals. The purpose of the present study is the description and evaluation of the new technological techniques that are applied to rabbits. Following the contribution of rabbit to the scientific research, there is a detailed description of embryo transfer in rabbits. Several experimental studies are presented in order to compare the different methods that can be used. There is a brief description of in vitro fertilization in rabbits, a technique that can be combined with embryo transfer. The production of transgenic animals includes embryo transfer. This is the reason why each step of it it is described separately, while studies referring to transgenic rabbits are presented.
