Development prospects of curable osteoplastic materials in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery

Abstract: The article presents classification of the thermosetting materials for bone augmentation. The physical, mechanical, biological, and clinical properties of such materials are reviewed. There are two main types of curable osteoplastic materials: bone cements and hydrogels. Compared to hydrogels, bone cements have high strength features, but their biological properties are not ideal and must be improved. Hydrogels are biocompatible and closely mimic the extracellular matrix. They can be used as cytocompatible sca… Show more

“…Hydrogels are three-dimensional cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers [ 37 , 38 , 39 ], and many biomedical applications of alginates are in the form of hydrogels, including wound healing, drug delivery and tissue engineering [ 5 , 14 , 40 , 41 ]. Since the first report of its utility in insulin microencapsulation in 1980, alginate hydrogel has become the most widely used functional material for cell encapsulation and drug carrier [ 42 ].…”

“…The intended use of HA in dentistry is mainly the regeneration of soft tissues, but also wound healing and regeneration of hard tissues. HA may be used as a co-material (together with other biopolymers) in several procedures related to dentistry: papilla reconstruction, osseointegration of implants, sinus lifting, periodontitis, and stomatitis therapy [ 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 ].…”

“…Подібні втручання поширені в хірургії, травматології, онкології і зокрема в стоматології. Проблема регенерації кісткової тканини є однією з найактуальніших у сучасній хірургічній стоматології і щелепно-лицевій хірургії [2]. Зубоальвеолярні дефекти щелепних кісток дуже поширені і є серйозною проблемою в стоматологічному лікуванні та реабілітації [3].…”
