Development Period of Forensic Importance Calliphoridae (Diptera: Brachycera) in Urban Area Under Natural Conditions in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract: Abstract. In order to describe the development period of forensically-important Calliphoridae species (Diptera: Brachycera) under natural conditions in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, two experiments were carried out at Campus II of National Institute for Amazon Research (INPA), Manaus, Amazonas, one in the rainy season and the other one in the less rainy season. Pig carcasses (25kg each) were used as attractive to oviposition of the blowflies. Calliphoridae females were collected and the eggs were placed into conta… Show more

“…In the neotropics this species is found from the north of Mexico to south South America (Whitworth 2014), and had also been reported in forensic studies in Europe (Velásquez et al 2010), in North America (Debry et al 2013;Sanford et al 2014), in Central America (Garcés et al 2004;Calderón-Arguedas et al 2005), and in South America (Rocha et al 2010;RamosPastrana and Wolff 2011;Barros-Souza et al 2012;UrarahyRodrigues et al 2013;Ramos-Pastrana et al 2014). The objectives of this research were to analyze the intra-puparial development of Lucilia eximia, and to describe chronological and morphological changes that occur during this stage.…”

“…It is considered the most abundant species in urban and rural zones (Barros-Souza et al 2012). During its larval stage it is a facultative predator of eggs and larvae of other dipterans (Rosa et al 2006).…”

“…This genus has medical and veterinary importance, may cause myiasis (Guimarães & PaPavero 1999;Ferraz et al 2011), and disseminates pathogens (ribeiro et al 2011). They are also listed as being relevant in forensic entomology by assisting in post-mortem interval determination (oliveira-Costa 2007;barros-souza 2012). Furthermore, they play an important ecological role, due to high predatory capacity (baumGartner 1993) this genus has been changing the frequency and abundance of populations of local fauna (leandro & d'almeida 2005).…”

“…The great diversity of blowflies acting on carcasses occurs due to factors such as their presence in several biomes with their idiosyncrasies within the Brazilian territory, besides the different climates between the regions and the size of the territory (CARVALHO et al, 2000;ROSA et al, 2009;BARBOSA et al, 2010;BIAVATI et al, 2010;DOS ANJOS et al, 2010;KOSMANN et al, 2011;ROSA et al, 2011;BARROS-SOUZA et al, 2012;BEUTER et al, 2012;FARIA et al, 2013;ALVES et al, 2014;VASCONCELOS et al, 2014) . The Calliphoridae family makes it possible to estimate the postmortem interval of human cadavers by means of their larvae and therefore has great relevance for forensic studies.…”
