Development, optimization and scale-up of biodiesel production from crude palm oil and effective use in developing countries

Abstract: An industrial project is developed to optimize the chemically catalysed biodiesel production from crude palm oil. This process is intended to be applied on a one ton scale and to be used on the palm oil production facility in equatorial Africa (Ivory Coast and later Cameroon). The produced biodiesel is consumed for the fleet of the company. Because of the specific conditions (unrefined oil with possibly high acidity as starting material, application on the field in technologically difficult conditions), it was… Show more

“…The optimum biodiesel yield for this research was 88% in a 6:1 ratio (methoxide : oil), at 1 h and at a temperature of 60 °C, with a cetane number of 62.8 and properties classified into international quality specifications for use and commercialization of this biodiesel. 160 In a work carried out by Cukalovic et al, 161 through reactive alkaline catalysis (3.85% KOH m/v), reaction yields of 97.5% wt of biodiesel per oil used weight were reached. The biodiesel generated has met the European standards proposed for the use of this biofuel in automotive vehicles.…”

Palm oil can also be used in functional and nutritional food because of its high phytonutrient contents, such as carotene, tocopherol, and tocotrienol.…”
