Development of wear resistant medium carbon dual phase steels and their mechanical properties

Abstract: Dual phase (DP) steels containing four different amounts of martensite ranging from 42 to 72 vol.-% have been developed from 0 . 42 wt-% carbon normalised steel by intercritical heat treatment at a xed temperature of 740°C but varying holding times followed by water quenching. Mechanical properties of dual phase steels with increasing volume fraction of martensite have been investigated highlighting the effect of martensite content. The macrohardness has been found to increase with increasing martensite conten… Show more

“…However, medium or higher carbon dual-phase steels have recently gained importance due to improved strength and wear resistance. Medium-carbon dual-phase steels can be used for applications in mineral and mining processes which do not require any welding operation ( Ref 17,18). Nowadays, dual-phase steels are also used as wear resistance materials if proper combination of strength and ductility is obtained ( Ref 7,19,20).…”

“…In a recent study they have also been found to hold good potential for use as farm implements where strength and wear resistant become of a great concern . The tribology of dual phase steels has not yet been explored extensively, and only a few studies have been reported (Tyagi et al, 2001(Tyagi et al, , 2004Jha et al, 2003;Modi, 2007;Modi et al, 2003;Basak et al, 1998). Modi (2007) has shown that the abrasion resistance of dual phase steel is greatly Tehran, Iran.…”

“…They have recently emerged as a potential engineering material system for automobile and other engineering application (Davies and Magee, 1979). Low carbon dual phase steels have found application in making pipe-lines for transportation of mineral slurry and other wear resistant applications (Tyagi et al, 2004). In a recent study they have also been found to hold good potential for use as farm implements where strength and wear resistant become of a great concern .…”
