The design of a 6.5-MV linear transformer driver (LTD) for flash-radiography experiments is presented. The design is based on a previously tested 1-MV LTD and is predicted to be capable of producing diode voltages of 6.5 MV for a 50-Ω radiographic-diode load. Several fault modes are identified, and circuit simulations are used to determine their effect on the output pulse and other components. For all the identified fault modes, the peak load voltage is reduced by less than 5%.Index Terms-Circuit simulation, electron accelerator, pulse power systems, radiography, X-ray applications.

Herein we present details of the design, simulation, and performance of a 100-GW linear transformer driver (LTD) cavity at Sandia National Laboratories. The cavity consists of 20 "bricks." Each brick is comprised of two 80 nF, 100 kV capacitors connected electrically in series with a custom, 200 kV, threeelectrode, field-distortion gas switch. The brick capacitors are bipolar charged to AE100 kV for a total switch voltage of 200 kV. Typical brick circuit parameters are 40 nF capacitance (two 80 nF capacitors in series) and 160 nH inductance. The switch electrodes are fabricated from a WCu alloy and are operated with breathable air. Over the course of 6,556 shots the cavity generated a peak electrical current and power of 1.03 MA (AE1.8%) and 106 GW (AE3.1%). Experimental results are consistent (to within uncertainties) with circuit simulations for normal operation, and expected failure modes including prefire and latefire events. New features of this development that are reported here in detail include: (1) 100 ns, 1 MA, 100-GW output from a 2.2 m diameter LTD into a 0.1 Ω load, (2) high-impedance solid charging resistors that are optimized for this application, and (3) evaluation of maintenance-free trigger circuits using capacitive coupling and inductive isolation.

Based on a transmission line code, a circuit model is proposed that could serve as the basic method for the analysis of linear transformer driver (LTD)-based accelerators. By using 1 MA, 100 kV LTD cavities, the peak load current is optimized for a total of N cavities between 500 and 1200. The simulation results suggest that, with the same number of cavities, the peak current changes obviously with the types of combinations, and the maximum change can be as large as 1.2 MA. The results also show that, for the cases considered, the optimized peak current as a function of the total number of cavities agrees with the exponential associate, and the peak current for one level LTD cannot be enhanced infinitely. Furthermore, it is found that, to obtain a 20 MA peak load current, at least 1029 LTD cavities (49 in series and 21 in parallel connection) are needed. Finally, the typical parameters of the optimized design are compared to those of the existing Z accelerator.
