We occasionally place our bodies under pressure, for example, by playing sports or giving an important presentation at a business meeting. In such situations, most of us have experienced choking, which impairs performance. It has been reported that controlling the heart rate is effective at reducing anxiety, which is one of the causes of choking. Previous studies have proposed a method of reducing choking by undergoing special training for controlling heart rate. Here, we investigated whether a reduction in heart rate after physical activity reduces choking without any special training. Participants bowled under both high-pressure and low-pressure conditions. Before throwing the bowling ball, half of the participants ran on the spot (active condition), whereas the rest of the participants stood instead of running (inactive condition). After controlling for the baseline score, the bowling score in the high-pressure and active condition was significantly better than that in the inactive condition. Additionally, the reduction in heart rate in the active condition was larger than that in the inactive condition. These results suggest that the reduction in heart rate prevented choking without any specific training.

Há cerca de 50 anos, a etiologia de uma série de doenças de plantas, até então desconhecidas ou atribuídas a possíveis vírus, começou a ser elucidada com a descoberta dos viroides. Minúsculos agentes fitopatogênicos e constituídos exclusivamente por uma molécula de RNA circular de fita simples, os viroides têm causado epidemias, principalmente em cultivos protegidos de hortaliças e ornamentais. Apesar de induzirem sintomas que podem ser severos, muitas infecções transcorrem sem que haja a expressão de sintomas perceptíveis, dificultando o diagnóstico, o que possibilita a perpetuação dos viroides nos cultivos, facilitando a sua disseminação. Atualmente, as taxas de transmissão de viroides por sementes e sua distribuição geográfica incerta e dinâmica têm suscitado questões relacionadas à produção de sementes e aos riscos de disseminação desses patógenos. Pretende-se com esta revisão abordar e discutir aspectos da biologia dos pospiviroides (família Pospiviroidae), especificamente dos gêneros Pospiviroid, Hostuviroid e Coleviroid, que infectam hortaliças e ornamentais, incluindo o estado da arte da sua distribuição geográfica e ocorrência, classificação, sintomas, transmissão, diagnóstico, epidemiologia e estratégias para o manejo e controle desses patógenos

In Poland, it is mandatory to index seed tubers for Potato virus Y (PVY), Potato virus M (PVM) and Potato leafroll virus (PLRV). Currently, the incidence of viral infection in seed tubers is determined by grow-out test. Direct testing of tubers after harvest by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) can be beneficial but its application is so far hampered by the high cost of commercial kits for RNA isolation and poor usability of manual methods for routine diagnostics. In this work, we compare several commercial kits with the silica capture RT-PCR (SC-RT-PCR) for direct detection of PVY. The silica capture of RNA in conjunction with optimized PCR conditions facilitates quick and sensitive detection of PVY and offers cost effective and reliable alternative to commercial kits.Resumen En Polonia, los tubérculos-semilla son analizados obligatoriamente para el virus Y de la papa (PVY), virus M de la papa (PVM) y el enrollamiento de la hoja (PLRV). Actualmente, la incidencia de infección viral en tubérculo-semilla se determina por pruebas durante el crecimiento. Las pruebas directas de tubérculos después de la cosecha con la reverso-transcripción por la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (RT-PCR) pudiera ser benéfica, pero su aplicación se limita por el alto costo de juegos comerciales para el aislamiento de ARN y por el pobre uso de métodos manuales para diagnósticos de rutina. En este trabajo comparamos varios juegos comerciales con la efectividad de costos de captura de sílice RT-PCR para detección directa de PVY. La sensibilidad en la detección del PVY en ARN preparado por captura de sílice fue igual o mayor que en ARN aislado usando juegos comerciales. El ARN por captura de sílice junto con condiciones óptimas de PCR facilita la detección rápida y sensible de PVY y ofrece una alternativa efectiva, en costos y confiabilidad, a los juegos comerciales.
