Development of the lung of the brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula

Abstract: The developing lung of the brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula , was studied by light microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy was used to study the morphology of the conducting airways in the adult. Bronchi did not extend beyond the hilus of each of the six lobes of the lung, and lobules were supplied by major bronchioles.By 105 days post partum, bronchi and bronchioles were fully formed, coinciding with the emergence of mucosal associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), which preceded alveolar maturation… Show more

“…The bronchial cartilages of the grey short‐tailed opossum only surround the extrapulmonary portion of the principal bronchi. This differs from the ring‐like bronchial cartilages in the domestic carnivores (Getty, 1975) but is similar to the brushtail possum (Cooke and Alley, 2002).…”

“…The principal bronchi of the grey short‐tailed opossum were divided into an extrapulmonary and intrapulmonary portion followed by branching into secondary and tertiary bronchi. This division of the bronchial tree differs from that of the brushtail possum (Cooke and Alley, 2002) in which a recent description indicated, ‘the lung parenchyma within each lobe of the brushtail possum was found to be supplied by major bronchioles, and there were no true bronchi within the lung’.…”
