Development of the design for the No. 2 spillway at the Boguchany hydroproject

Abstract: A design is proposed for a stepped spillway.A detailed design of the Boguchany HPP with a rated capacity of 3000 MW (nine generating sets each with a capacity of 330,000 kW and a reservoir at elevation 208 m was approved in 1979 by order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in an agreement reached with the State Committee on Construction. In 1982, the first cubic meter of concrete was placed in the basic structures of the hydroproject. From 1993 through 2005, construction proceeded at extremely low rates on… Show more

“…A few prototype stepped spillways with various aerator designs are reported: Dachaoshan dam (China) [32,33], Wadi Dayqah dam (Oman) [34,35], Boguchany dam (Russia) [36], and enlarged Cotter RCC dam (Australia) [37]. They were all designed for q ≥ 30 m 2 /s and included physical model tests.…”

“…The design for an additional spillway with a height of more than 80 m with a stepped spillway face in the body of the concrete dam to ensure the required carrying capacity of the hydroproject during temporary and permanent service for specific flow rates of up to 45 m 2 /sec was developed for the Boguchany hydroproject [4]. The design of the stepped spillway, the configuration of its overflow cap, and the parameters of the bench-aerator and steps were substantiated by experimental hydraulic studies conducted by G. A. Sudol'-skii.…”
