Development of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIOs)-Embedded Chitosan Microspheres for Magnetic Resonance (MR)-Traceable Embolotherapy

Abstract: -Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIOs)-embedded chitosan microspheres were developed for magnetic resonance (MR)-traceable embolotherapy. SPIOs-loaded chitosan microspheres were prepared by emulsion and cross-linking technique and 100-200 μm sized spherical microsparticles were obtained. Loading efficacy and loading amount of SPIOs in microspheres were about 40% and 0.26-0.32%, respectively, when measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Within 30 days, about 60% of the … Show more

“…Since excessive exposure to X-rays is harmful [57], patients would be safer if physicians could observe their changes visually with reduced usage of them. Kang et al [58] used superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIOs), nanocrystals of iron oxides coated with hydrophilic polymers, to achieve such an objective. SPIOs are originally used as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).…”

“…These ones comprise the possibility to incorporate iron oxide. In this context, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles embedded chitosan microspheres were developed for magnetic resonance (MR)-traceable embolotherapy with high resolution and sensitivity through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [ 62 ]. “…In recent times, several researchers have focused on polymer beads incorporated with iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) of superparamagnetic. The magnetic polymer beads were found to be ideal as embolic agents for cancer embolism [4]. These magnetic beads can be detected and visualized mainly in the affected areas through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [5], [6].…”
