Development of SNMP‐XML translator and gateway for XML‐based integrated network management

Abstract: The research objective of our work is to develop a SNMP MIB to XML translation algorithm and to implement an SNMP-XML gateway using this algorithm. The gateway is used to transfer management information between an XML-based manager and SNMP-based agents. SNMP is widely used for Internet management, but SNMP is insufficient to manage continuously expanding networks because of constraints in scalability and efficiency. XML-based network management architectures are newly proposed as alternatives to SNMP-based ne… Show more

“…Achieving a clean XML structure makes the conversion algorithm more complicated compared to most other approaches that are more destined to a 1:1 SMI mapping and look more like an 'XML-ified SMI'. The most notable of these other approaches known to the authors are those from Mazumdar [6], from Hong et al [7,8], and from Martin-Flatin [4]. Some major aspects of these approaches are compared in Table 1.…”

“…One important type of XPath expression is a location path, which selects a set of nodes relative to the context node, and can recursively contain sub -expressions that are used to filter a set of nodes. For example, "/" selects the document root and "./hostInfo [1]" selects the first "hostInfo" child of the context node, and device[@type="server"] selects all the "device" descendants of the document root that have a "type" attribute with a value "server".…”

“…In our previous work on the XML/SNMP Gateway, we defined an SNMP MIB to XML translation algorithm, and also implemented an automatic SNMP MIB to XML translator using this algorithm [1]. For validation of the algorithm, we had implemented an XML-based SNMP MIB browser using this SNMP MIB to XML Translator.…”

“…Also, there are several works that use XML to represent machine configurations, like the ones by Strauss and Klie [7], and Yoon et al [8], both mapping SNMP to XML. The drawback is that SNMP has a very flat structure that does not represent aspects like associations as flexibly as CIM [9].…”
