Development of Simple Multiple-Choice Diagnostic Test of Acid-Base Concepts to Identify Studentsr Alternative Conceptions

Abstract: Alternative conception is students' conception of scientific concepts that are inconsistent with the conception of scientists. Various studies show that alternative conceptions of chemical concepts occur in students, including acid-base concepts. Various identification of alternative conception methods have also been developed, including a simple multiple-choice diagnostic test. Although not too accurate, simple multiple-choice diagnostic test is easy to develop, use, and analyze, but useful enough to identify… Show more

“…Many multiplechoice tests have been developed. Some of them are, for example, chemical reactions [15], properties of particulate of matter, chemical reactions, ability to use laws and chemical theories to explain phenomena, and chemical applications in everyday life [4], basic chemistry contents [11,[16][17], and acid-base chemistry [18][19][20][21]. These examples show that multiple-choice tests have long been widely used.…”

“…Students must have a strong understanding of concepts, so they have no difficulty understanding hydrocarbon material (Ramadani et al, 2020). Understanding inappropriate material concepts can lead to misconceptions (Muntholib et al, 2018). Based on research conducted by Redhana (2011), at least nine misconceptions are experienced by students in studying the material of hydrocarbon compounds, one of which is related to isomerism.…”

“…The difficulties experienced by students in understanding a learning material can lead to an inappropriate understanding of concepts (Muntholib, et al, 2018). Good concept understanding is the basis of good problem-solving skills (Kurniawan et al, 2016;Ulya, 2016;Kurniawan and Taqwa, 2018).…”
