For nearly 40 years the Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RIB) has evolved from a first generation surf boat for lifesaving into a number of second generation utility, recreational and military designs. This paper summarizes the important factors in second generation development such as weight, hull material selection, and engine selection. Then it reviews the compatibility of the RIB with current combatant design objectives — manning reduction, radar cross section reduction, and topside weight reduction — to project the third generation design as an integral component of future combatant designs.
