Development of recombinant high yielding lines with improved protein content in rice (Oryza sativaL.)

Abstract: Rice has the lowest grain protein content (GPC) among cereals. Efforts have been made to improve GPC through the modified bulk-pedigree method of selection. A total of 1780 F8 recombinant lines were derived in the year 2013 from five different cross combinations involving two high-GPC landraces, namely ARC10075 and ARC10063, three high-yielding parents, namely Swarna, Naveen and IR64, and one parent, namely Sharbati, known for superior grain quality with high micronutrient content. Near-infrared spectroscopy w… Show more

“…Similar kind of reports for AC, GT and GC were available in public domain(Ponce et al 2018;Yang et al 2018).In general, the anti-waxy gene increases protein content and decreases the amylose content of rice grains(Li et al 2009). A negative association of grain protein and amylose content has been observed in previous studies(Yang et al 2004;Chattopadhyay et al 2018). In the present association analysis, we could not detect markers in association with Wx locus.…”

“…In addition, although the protein content of rice grains is relatively low compared with other cereal crops ( Mahender et al. 2016) , the protein quality of rice grains is superior due to a better balanced amino acid profile and the presence in high amounts of highly nutritive and digestible glutelins ( Chattopadhyay et al. 2018) .…”
