Development of Poly(ionic liquids) Based on Mepiquat Chloride with Improved Rainfastness and Long-Lasting Activity on Growth Regulation of Cotton Plant

Abstract: As one of the plant growth regulators, mepiquat chloride (MC) has become one of the most useful tools to manage plant geometry during cotton growth and development. Since it is highly water-soluble and needs to be applied repeatedly during cotton growth, there is an urgent need to design a novel effective formulation for reducing unwanted loss of MC and prolonging its effective duration. Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs), as a particular class of ionic liquids are composed of a polymeric backbone and an IL spec… Show more

“…This concept is based on pairing appropriate organic cation—with herbicidal anion. Herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) have numerous advantages such as adjustable physicochemical properties e.g., phase transitions (i.e., melting point), viscosity, polarity, water solubility or mobility in soils and waters [ 7 , 20 , 26 ]. The presence of an ionic bond in their structure reduces the volatility which positively affects the safety associated with their application [ 27 ].…”

“…MC is a compound used to regulate plant growth and development because it is absorbed by the plant's leaves and then distributed to the other parts of the plant [51]. MC is a water-soluble exogenous hormone that may be supplied by soaking seeds or spraying leaves [52].…”

“…Pesticides play an irreplaceable role in controlling the outbreak of diseases, pests, and weeds to improve crop yields and making outstanding contributions to the food security for a growing world population. , Herbicides, which have the advantages of high efficiency, convenience, and speed, are widely used in farmland, gardens, orchards, and uncultivated lands. , Herbicide technicals are often processed into formulations by adding various chemical additives to facilitate the use in harsh environments. , Unfortunately, there have been many problems caused by herbicidal formulations, such as volatilization, leaching, and rain-washing loss, in agricultural application due to the unreasonable formulation design. Specially, organic solvents, emulsifiers, wetting agents, dispersants, and other additives used in herbicidal formulations usually cause serious phytotoxicity to non-target plants, increased toxicity to mammals, and even polluted surface water and groundwater, resulting in huge risks to ecosystems and human health. Therefore, it is essential to develop a new herbicidal formulation to reduce off-target losses and harms to human health and environment.…”
