Development of Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimer/ Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hybrid Membranes for CO2 Capture at Elevated Pressures

Abstract: To improve CO2 separation performance of Poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer at pressure difference conditions, hybrid membranes have been developed by immobilizing of PAMAM dendrimer into a cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) polymer matrix. A multifunctional cross-linker (MFX) such as trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) was used to enhance membrane separation performance at elevated pressures. The resulting hybrid membrane PAMAM dendrimer / PEGDMA/TMPTMA hybrid membrane exhibit… Show more

“…Kovvali and Sirkar were the first to report carbon capture on G0 PAMAM dendrimer immobilized in the pores of a hydrophilized microporous polymeric membrane [28]. Cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) polymer matrix with immobilized PAMAM showed CO 2 /H 2 selectivity of 30 at 40 • C [29]. The amount of CO 2 that was adsorbed also increased upon loading of amine-terminated G4 PAMAM dendrimer on cation-exchange clays [30].…”

“…Hybrid membrane, which is one kind of special material, was studied for its CO 2 capture capacity with PEI impregnation and showed a satisfactory energy consumption as recorded by Duan and co-workers. 21 Liu's group selected the 5A zeolite powder as the support to be impregnated with PEI which showed a promising CO 2 adsorption capacity with various test methods for characterization. 22 However, clay materials are the most economical materials compared with the above materials and have not been systematically researched, 23 including the amine-functionalized sepiolite studied by Vilarrasa-Garcia 24 and Yuan 25 and amine-modified bentonite studied by Elkhalifah et al 26 The desorption energy consumption is also an important characteristic of sorbents, and it can be a determinant in the evaluation of the applied value of the sorbents.…”

“…Polymer blending was regarded as a simple but effective method to address two problems above. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been selected to blend with various amino group-rich polymers for fabrication of fixed carrier facilitated transport membranes owing to its good compatibility with polyamines and good film-forming ability [274,275,279,280]. supports [279].…”
