Development of On-Road Automated Vehicle Simulator for Motion Sickness Studies

Abstract: This paper presents the development of the Mobility Lab, an instrumented car that was developed to support research on the comfort of automated driving. The Mobility Lab was established as a platform to investigate the implications of motion sickness on human users especially when exposed to low-frequency horizontal forces while engaging in non-driving activities. First, the Mobility Lab's overview of interior setup and system architecture involving data acquisition system with its sensors is described. Then, … Show more

“…We used the TU/e Mobility Lab [24], a Renault Espace van, and modified it in a similar way as the RRADS platform [2] to create the illusion of an AV. We refer to the actual driver of the vehicle as "automation wizard" or "safety driver".…”

“…Unlike the speed control, the spacing control mode only use part two, provided that the value of 𝐷 𝑅 is smaller than 𝐷 𝑠𝑎𝑓𝑒 according to equation (8). The acceleration value of the ego car (𝑎 𝐸 ) is adjusted by considering the safe acceleration range for driver's comfort, which is -3,234 m/s 2 to 2,45 m/s 2 [24]. In this research, the acceleration limit is between -3 and 2 m/s 2 .…”

“…The Mobility Lab was employed as an on-road automated vehicle simulator to provide a fully automated driving experience (see [24] for a detailed explanation of the test setup). The automated driving style that was selected was based on the previous studies in which a setting called defensive automated driving style [25], [26].…”
