Development of Octyl Methoxy Cinnamates (OMC)/Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) Nanoparticles by Sol-Gel Emulsion Method

Abstract: Although octyl methoxy cinnamates (OMC) is the most used Ultraviolet B (UVB) filter in sunscreen, it has poor light stability in emulsion system. In this study, OMC/SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared via sol-gel emulsion method. Tetraethoxy silane (TEOS) was used as the silica source to encapsulate OMC. Modification of experimental parameters such as stirring speed of condensation reaction and emulsion condition, pH value of acid-catalyzed, surfactant and different percentage of TEOS and OMC, adding of OMC and s… Show more

“…The ultraviolet rays that reach the Earth are mainly divided into long‐wave ultraviolet rays (ultraviolet radiation A, UVA, 320 ~ 400 nm) and medium‐wave ultraviolet rays (ultraviolet radiation B, UVB, 290 ~ 320 nm). UVA accounts for 95% of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth's surface 1 and leads to skin ageing and wrinkling because of cellular DNA damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production 2,3 . UVB is a major cause of skin reddening and sunburn through direct DNA damage 3 .…”

“…Tolbert et al have designed hybrid organic/inorganic silica particles, encapsulating organic sunscreens in silica NPs, in order to reduce their phototoxicity and degradation [59]. Similarly, the octyl methoxycinnamate, one of the most common UVB filters included in sunscreen formulations, when encapsulated in silica scaffold, improve its photostability [47], corroborating the usefulness of silica nanosystems in the cosmetic field.…”

“…The sunscreens containing 4-coumaric acid and EHMC showed better UV-shielding effectiveness in 16 lignin models, with a SPF of 19.37. The improvement was attributed to the interaction between the aromatic rings of the lignin models and EHMC through PD-stacked π–π stacking [ 13 ].…”
