Development of modified expanded graphite-filled solution polymerized styrene butadiene rubber vulcanizates in the presence and absence of carbon black

Abstract: Expanded graphite (EG) consists of a huge number of partially exfoliated graphite sheets with the thickness of most of the sheets in the nanometer range. This study analyses the effect of EG and modified EG (MEG) on the mechanical, thermal, and dynamic mechanical properties of solution styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) with and without carbon black (CB). The surface of the EG was modified to enhance its dispersion in the SSBR matrix. In addition, oil-extended carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR) was used… Show more

“…The DSC curves of pure SSBR and SSBR composites with different fillers are shown in Figure , from which the glass transition temperatures ( T g ) can be obtained according to the half step method. The pure SSBR has a T g at about −26.78 °C, which is similar to previous reported . With m‐ SiO 2 , n ‐SiO 2 , N660 being massively added in the SSBR, the T g of the SSBR/ m‐ SiO 2 , SSBR/ n ‐SiO 2 , and SSBR/N660 slightly increase compared to the pure SSBR, and especially the T g of the SSBR/ n ‐SiO 2 and SSBR/N660 shifts to higher temperature of about −24.96 and −24.14 °C, respectively.…”

“…The pure SSBR has a T g at about 226.78 8C, which is similar to previous reported. 19 With m-SiO 2 , n-SiO 2 , N660 being massively added in the SSBR, the T g of the SSBR/m-SiO 2 , SSBR/n-SiO 2 , and SSBR/N660 slightly increase compared to the pure SSBR, and especially the T g of the SSBR/n-SiO 2 and SSBR/ N660 shifts to higher temperature of about 224.96 and 224.14 8C, respectively. These results could be explained that the silica and carbon black embedded crosslinked network, limiting the segment movement of chains, which caused the increase in the glass transition temperature of the composites.…”

“…EG has been introduced to a variety of rubbers, including acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) , silicone rubber (SR) , fluoroelastomer (FEM) , styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) , natural rubber (NR) , carboxylated acylonitrile rubber (CNBR) , and acrylate elastomer (ACM) . The as‐prepared rubber/EG composites have exhibited substantial improvement in mechanical properties, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, and barrier properties.…”

“…Finally, the initial cracks only extended along the relatively weaker interfaces generated in the process of repeated dynamic deformation. Crack propagation was opposed by the dispersed filler particles in the SSBR matrix, which altered the crack lines, depending on their orientation in the rubber matrix . As a result, the crack extension paths were actually prolonged.…”
