Development of models for the prediction of first-year corrosion losses of standard metals for territories with a coastal atmosphere in various climatic regions of the world

Abstract: This paper presents various models (dose-response functions, DRFs) for predicting the first-year corrosion losses of structural metals for areas with marine and marine-urban (industrial) atmospheres. The prediction results for the first-year corrosion losses (C 1 pr ) calculated by the DRF from the ISO 9223 standard and by the DRF developed by us are presented. A comparative assessment of the results is given. In this work, we used experimental data on the corrosion losses of carbon steel (CS), Zn, Cu, and Al … Show more

“…New DRFs were originally reported in earlier studies [9,10]. Later, the coefficients were modified in the DRFs for steel, zinc and copper for the parameters T and Prec (see below), resulting in an improvement in the DRFs for continental locations with both T > 10°C and T ≤ 10°C [11][12][13].…”

“…Various steel grades, widely used in industry, are susceptible to corrosion under different operating conditions. One of the common types of corrosion is atmospheric corrosion of carbon steels in industrial and coastal (marine) areas with high humidity [1,2]. It is known that stainless steels are resistant to general corrosion, but are susceptible to local (pitting) corrosion in eroding liquids (for example, in chloride-containing solutions [3,4]) transported in the petrochemical, oil refining and mining industries.…”

“…The models for the prediction of C 1 values for standard metals in various regions of the world are described in an international standard (DRF S ) [1]. A new DRF version (DRF N ) for continental regions of the world was published [3,4], and the numerical coefficients of DRF N were later refined [5,6]. The DRF S were obtained by regression analysis of databases that included the experimental first-year corrosion losses of conventional metals ( C 1 exp ) and meteorological and air-chemical parameters of test sites measured within the ISO CORRAG programme [7] and the MICAT project [8].…”

“…Comparison of the C 1 values calculated using these DRFs with C 1 exp shows that the prediction errors are fairly large [3 5]. It was noted, in particular, that an attempt to develop new DRFs for coastal regions of the entire globe failed [6]. In view of this, it seems necessary to continue the search for predictive models of atmospheric corrosion of metals.…”
