Development of methods for the analysis of multi-mode TFM images

Abstract: TFM (Total Focusing Method) is an advanced post-processing imaging algorithm of ultrasonic array data that shows good potential in defect detection and characterization. It can be employed using an infinite number of paths between transducer and focusing point. Depending upon the geometry and the characteristics of the defect in a given part, there are not the same modes that are appropriate for the defect reconstruction. Furthermore, non-physical indications can be observed, prone to misinterpretation. These … Show more

“…These modes can generate different TFM images and could be useful for defect characterization depending on the defect features. This means that not all modes give clear indication of defect features [15]. Thus, care must be taken when choosing the appropriate TFM modes and images for defect characterization.…”

“…Thus, care must be taken when choosing the appropriate TFM modes and images for defect characterization. It is beneficial to combine these modes for a thorough analysis of a defect in question, i.e., multi-mode TFM analysis [14][15][16][17].…”

“…Because the central element is used for reception, the beam focusing behavior is analyzed along the central axis. The beam focusing simulation in this section was conducted using the CIVA program [30][31][32], a nondestructive simulation platform. In the CIVA simulation, aluminum was selected as the propagation medium, and the following acoustic properties including the nonlinear parameter were used [28]: longitudinal wave velocity, c = 6422 m/s; density, ρ = 2700 kg/m 3 ; fundamental wave frequency, f = 5 MHz; and nonlinear parameter, β = 5.5.…”

“…Consequently, it is difficult to detect flaws in welds and evaluate their reliability using PAUT. To complement this, numerous studies have been conducted on PAUT, including automatic beam focusing technology [ 22 , 23 ] and the total focusing method (TFM) [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Most studies have focused on measurement technology, signal processing techniques, and sensor development; these require time for field application, as they are still being conducted in laboratories.…”
