Development of methanol selective membranes for separation of methanol-methyl tertiary butyl ether mixtures by pervaporation

Abstract: Several copolymers of acrylonitrile (AN) were synthesized. Methanol selective membranes were prepared from these copolymers of AN. The other monomers in the copolymers were selected on the basis of their solubility parameter values relative to those of methanol. These were hydroxyethyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid, and vinyl pyrrolidone. Thus, pervaporative separation of methanol from its mixture with methyl tertiary butyl ether over the entire concentration range of 0 -100% methanol was studied using these … Show more

“…In the FTIR of SEMIIPN1 a strong band is observed at around 1626.9 cm −1 corresponding to carboxyl (COOH) peak due to acrylic acid present in the hydrogel. Similarly, OH bending vibrations at around 1114 cm −1 correspond to poly vinyl alcohol (PVOH) as well as hydroxyethyl methacrylate comonomer of the copolymer 18. The bands at around 3447 and 3760 cm −1 corresponds to crosslinked and uncrosslinked hydroxyl group of the hydrogel.…”

“…Similarly, OAH bending vibrations at around 1114 cm À1 correspond to poly vinyl alcohol (PVOH) as well as hydroxyethyl methacrylate comonomer of the copolymer. 18 The bands at around 3447 and 3760 cm À1 corresponds to crosslinked and uncrosslinked hydroxyl group of the hydrogel. These apart, the strong band at around 770 and 2900 cm À1 are due to (ACH 2 A) methylene 19 and CAH alkane group of the copolymer hydrogel.…”

“…We are concentrated in the use of polyurethanes (PUs) membranes to separated azeotropic mixtures by membranebased pervaporation (PV) technique [6,7]. The PV technique takes the advantage of mass transfer through membranes also, and it spends energy use when compared with traditional technologies, as destillation.…”

“…For some of these applications such as artificial skin, scaffolds for tissue engineering, and wound dressing, besides biocompatibility, biodegradability is a must have factor. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] With this process, new functional groups are added to the membranes' surface and get cross-linked. Among different grades of PU, castor oil has a very low toxicity, low cost, and is available as a renewable agriculture resource.…”
