Development of Metal Cyanurates: The Example of Barium Cyanurate (BCY)

Abstract: Metal cyanurate compounds were prepared by means of solid-state metathesis reactions between a metal halide and an alkali cyanurate. Following this procedure, a mixture of BaCl 2 and K(OCN) was heated in a fused silica tube at 575°C to yield highly crystalline barium cyanurate. This reaction was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)[a]

“…The utilization of solid state metathesis (SSM) reactions involving the cyclotrimerization of cyanate ions (OCN) − into the cyclic cyanurate ion (O 3 C 3 N 3 ) 3− has led to the development of the family of anhydrous metal cyanurates [4][5][6][7][8]. Among them are rare-earth (RE) metal cyanurates compounds with the general formula ARE 2 Cl(O 3 C 3 N 3 ) 2 .…”

“…[6] Better performance was obtained in reactions with K(OCN), which can be heated up to at least 550°C without decomposition. [5] This temperature seems to be sufficient because several reactions occur in the temperature region around 500°C. Another interesting example is the binary cyanurate Ba 3 (O 3 C 3 N 3 ) 2 , which was recently prepared from a mixture of BaCl 2 and K(OCN).…”
