Development of “LvL UP”, a smartphone-based, conversational agent-delivered holistic lifestyle intervention for the prevention of non-communicable diseases and common mental disorders

Abstract: Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and common mental disorders (CMDs) are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Lifestyle interventions via mobile apps and conversational agents present themselves as low-cost, scalable solutions to prevent these conditions. This paper describes the rationale for, and development of, “LvL UP”, a digital lifestyle intervention aimed at preventing NCDs and CMDs.Materials and Methods: A multidisciplinary team led the intervention design process of LvL UP,… Show more

“…The present findings indicate the need for further psychological and psychiatric interventions, as well as future research. One promising avenue for intervention is digital mental health interventions, which have the potential to reach large numbers of individuals in their daily lives ( 34 , 35 ). These interventions can be scalable and used for screening and identifying those individuals who may require additional human support ( 36 ).…”

“…Focus groups were conducted during July and August 2021 as part of a wider research project aimed at developing and evaluating a new smartphone-delivered lifestyle intervention for the prevention of NCDs and CMDs in Singapore [ 35 ]. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Boards of the National University of Singapore (NUS-IRB-2021-232) and ETH Zurich (EK-2021-N-30).…”

“…In line with recommendations [ 31 , 32 ], this focus group study recruited potential end-users of a new smartphone-delivered lifestyle intervention to inform the first phases of the development process [ 35 ]. Our intended target end-users are middle-aged adults who have a higher risk of developing NCDs than younger adults and may be identified as such through the national health screening programme in Singapore [ 37 ].…”

“…Despite all these limitations, the data of this work is an important building block to inform the design of scalable (digital) public health interventions for individuals living in crises that explicitly target mental health ( 54 , 55 ).…”

“…Besides, the cross-sectional study design implies that data are collected at a single moment in time, whereas data collection for this study lasted for almost 4 months. Despite all these limitations, the data of this work is an important building block to inform the design of scalable (digital) public health interventions for individuals living in crises that explicitly target mental health (54,55).…”
