This article proposes a methodology for generating hourly rainfall from daily rainfall data. It was evolved as a tool for managing flood risks on Ziz catchment, by means of Intensity-duration-frequency curves (IDF) and designed hyetograph of Chicago. The study area is located in the south-eastern part of Morocco, and did not have a monitoring station for hourly rain measure, the methodomogy consist of determinating the rainfall intensity for 24 h using IDF, then estimating the hourly rainfall using Chicago formula, in order to assess the accuracy of the method the resulting hyetographs was introduced into the semi-distributed hydrological model HEC HMS to simulate hourly flow, which was compared to the observed one. The obtaining results exhibit that the observed value is positively correlated with those obtained by the above method, as shown by the correlation coefficient and the Nash-Sutcliffe. This approach can deal with instantaneous water management issues by tackling flood risks and providing an appropriate range of data for the dam’s management.

Poor air quality usually leads to PM2.5 warnings and affects human health. The impact of frequency and duration of extreme air quality has received considerable attention. The extreme concentration of air pollution is related to its duration and annual frequency of occurrence known as concentration–duration–frequency (CDF) relationships. However, the CDF formulas are empirical equations representing the relationship between the maximum concentration as a dependent variable and other parameters of interest, i.e., duration and annual frequency of occurrence. As a basis for deducing the extreme CDF relationship of PM2.5, the function assumes that the extreme concentration is related to the duration and frequency. In addition, the spatial pattern estimation of extreme PM2.5 is identified. The regional CDF identifies the regional extreme concentration with a specified duration and return period. The spatial pattern of extreme air pollution over 8 h duration shows the hotspots of air quality in the central and southwestern areas. Central and southwestern Taiwan is at high risk of exposure to air pollution. Use of the regional CDF analysis is highly recommended for efficient design of air quality management and control.

Abstract. Analysis of a design storm, explained as the expected rainfall intensity for a given storm duration and return period is carried out to establish Rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) relationships. The IDF relationships are essential for the designing of hydraulic structures for future planning and management. The intent was to determine IDF relationship for the Barak River Basin in India. This region receives heavy rainfall but lacks potential in harnessing the available water resources. Rain gauge stations are not so frequent in this region. Under this condition, the engineers are bound to use IDF relationships. Using the 24-hour annual maximum rainfall and disaggregated hourly maximum rainfall as a measure of rainfall intensity for each station, IDF curves and isopluvial maps of rainfall intensities of 30-minute to 24-hour durations were generated. Analysis was done using the best fit amongst the Gumbel, Log Pearson Type III and Lognormal probability distribution functions. The goodness-of-fit tests indicated the Log Pearson Type III distribution was a suitable distribution for the area. After developing IDF curves for each station, an average IDF curve was developed using the Thiessen Polygon method in ArcGIS. The IDF relationship developed can be used as valuable information for the planning and management of hydraulic structures in the region.
