Development of intensity–duration–frequency curves for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This paper presents the derivation of the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Such curves were obtained based on rainfall events measured in 28 meteorological stations distributed throughout the Kingdom. For 20-28 years period, 2027 rainfall storms of durations ranging from 10 min to 24 hours were collected and analyzed. Both Institute of Hydrology model (IH-Flood) and Excel-sheet program are used for developing IDF equations for every station. The method of least squares… Show more

“…Gumbel distribution is obtained from the General Extreme Value (GEV), it was chosen for this study because of its adequacy to arid and semi-arid climate context [6], [7]. In general Gumbel distribution has two main parameters, the first one is a , related to the form of distribution and present the slope of the Gumbel graph, the second is b and related to the position according to the reduced variable u .…”

“…The DS are applied abundantly to design flood control structures (Ewea et al 2016). Although many studies have been done to develop the IDF relationships in the Brahmaputra River Basin of Assam state (Sharma et al 2016a;Das et al 2016), few studies have been conducted in the Barak River Basin.…”
