Development of intelligence 4 to 11 years after paediatric epilepsy surgery

Abstract: The results show similar intellectual outcomes for surgical and non-surgical paediatric patients. Four to 11 years after paediatric epilepsy surgery, seizure freedom, whether attained through epilepsy surgery or other means, was found to be associated with intellectual improvements. Seizure status and baseline scores were the most consistent predictors.

“…Improvements in IQ associated with seizure freedom in our sample (reported in Puka et al 22 ) were not associated with better memory in the current study, indicating that change in memory is not solely dependent on change in IQ. Although in univariable analyses improved IQ was associated with improved word list recall and word pair recall, this effect did not remain significant when controlling for other variables.…”

“…22 These findings may be helpful to physicians, patients, and families in understanding the possible outcomes following pediatric epilepsy surgery or continued use of antiepileptic medications. There were no improvments in memory evident over time, even in the patients who were seizurefree at follow-up.…”

“…Factors that are likely to contribute include postsurgical seizure freedom, cessation of antiepileptic drug (AED) use, preoperative IQ, and duration of follow‐up . Less attention has been paid to how brain structural changes and postsurgical brain development are linked to cognitive function.…”
