Development of innovative reactor-integrated coolant system design concept for a small modular lead fast reactor

Abstract: Summary The report describes the development of an innovative magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) space‐integrated coolant system design concept for the small modular lead fast reactor called the ubiquitous, rugged, accident‐forgiving, nonproliferating, and ultralasting sustainer reactor. The coolant system efficiency was analyzed based on space‐integrated geometric and electromagnetic variables related to the circulation of lead‐bismuth eutectic (LBE) liquid metal coolant in a reactor with a thermal output of 100 MWt a… Show more

“…Although the end effects and saturation problem have been considered in the correction coefficient, this method has some limitations and cannot be applied in the theoretical design stage. Different from the equivalent circuit method, in [17,18], the electromagnetic fields characteristics of ALIP were presented based on the Maxwell electromagnetic field equations. In [19], Seong categorized the induced eddy current in the liquid metal as the time derivative term generated by the time-varying magnetic field and the convective term originating from the sodium flow.…”

“…Since there is a curved channel in the pump outlet of loop‐type or pool‐type LFR, guide blade not only reduce coolant energy loss in this channel but also reduce coolant flow velocity and prevent damage in this area. What's more, in 2018 Jaesik et al 20 propose a capture magnetohydrodynamic coolant system design which has no internal structure, such as impellor or sealing part. This system is conducive to avoid LBE high flow velocity erosion of materials such as LBE pump blade.…”
