Development of imipenem resistance in an Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria clinical isolate recovered from a patient with cholangitis

Abstract: Several imipenem-susceptible and -resistant Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria isolates with different morphologies and antimicrobial susceptibilities recovered from bile samples of a patient with cholangitis were analysed. These isolates belonged to the same clone and the imipenemresistant strains showed overexpression of the imiS gene, encoding a chromosomal carbapenemase. These results should make clinicians aware of the possible emergence of multidrug-resistant A. veronii biovar sobria, perhaps as a consequen… Show more

“…To our knowledge, a fatal case of acquired carbapenemresistant Aeromonas septicemia has not yet been reported. A case report on hepatobiliary tract infection with carbapenem-resistant A. veronii biovar sobria, due to the induction of chromosomal carbapenemase, was first reported in 2009 (6). Verona integrin-encoded metallob-lactamase-producing Aeromonas was also isolated in a surveillance study conducted in Israel (8).…”

Compared with the meropenem-susceptible strain, the expression of metallo-b-lactamase in the meropenem-resistant strain was upregulated by 13.5-fold (n = 3).…”

“…A 2009 study of Aeromonas in France recommended that a cephalosporin or a quinolone be prescribed along with an aminoglycoside in cases of severe infection (6). We believe that the reported emerging resistance of Aeromonas to quinolones (1,10) and carbapenems (7,11), as well as aztreonam, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides (this report), might influence physicians to employ polytherapy for empirical treatment of severe Aeromonas hydrophila infections. However, comprehensive studies are needed to examine broader trends in Aeromonas antibiotic resistance.…”
