Development of high efficiency Versatile Arc Discharge Ion Source at CERN ISOLDE

Abstract: We report here recent developments of Forced Electron Beam Impact Arc Discharge (FEBIAD) ion sources at CERN-ISOLDE. As a result of the propositions to improve the ionization efficiency, two FEBIAD prototypes have been produced and successfully tested in 2008. Off-line studies showed that the 1+ ionization efficiencies for noble gases are 5 to 20 times larger than with the standard ISOLDE FEBIAD ion sources, and reach 60% for Radon, which allowed the identification at ISOLDE of 229 Rn, an isotope that had nev… Show more

“…The ions of interest, 35 Ar, were produced by ∼2 μA of protons at 1.4 GeV from the proton synchrotron booster (PSB) impinging on a CaO micro-structured target connected to a versatile arc discharge ion source (VADIS) [33]. With a cold transfer line elements other than noble gases were suppressed.…”

“…After the acceptance of the paper the authors became aware of the publication of new results regarding the effects of scattering limiting the attainable precision in nuclear beta decay measurements with implanted sources [57][58][59], and of the production of intense [31][32][33][34][35] Ar beams with a nanostructured CaO target [60].…”

“…Currently this approach makes use of a standard ISOLDE FEBIAD (the VADIS) ion source [44] as a laser-atom interaction volume, as seen in figure 6(b). When operating at low anode voltage (<10 V), and with optimized cathode and magnetic field settings, the FEBIAD cavity becomes an effective environment for selective laser resonance ionization.…”

“…The radioactive 60-keV 31 Ar beam used in the experiment was produced at the ISOLDE facility at the European research organization CERN, using a CaO target and a versatile arc discharge plasma ion source [17] coupled to the General Purpose Separator (GPS) [18]. The beam is produced by irradiating the target with short high-intensity proton pulses at low repetition rate [18].…”
