“…The haploid uninucleate condition of these endogeneous spores of Protomycopsis is here confirmed by the copulation and cellular fusion between 2 compatible ( endo )spores giving rise to a diploid zygote cell. Fusion occurs between haploid cells in Protomyces (PAVGI and MuKHO-PADHYAY 1969) and in Taphrina Fries (Mix 1949;PAVGI and UPADHYAY 1964 ), but the diploid cells, instead of forming a mycelium as in Protomycopsis, bud out on artificial culture medium. The chlamydospores of Protomyces and Protomycopsis follow a similar cytomorphic sequence in their development in artificial culture as in the host tissues and although deficient in maturation and pigmentation, in some cases, show the same germination potential.…”

“…They remained exposed to high summer temperatures in the field. A companion set of infected leaf pieces was kept at room temperature for testing comparative viability of the pathogen by germination of asci from the ascogenous cells at 15 days interval (PAVGI and UPADHYAY 1964). The ascogenous cells in the field material were periodically checked for germination in serial vertical sections with the onset of July rains.…”

“…The pathogen was cultured on potato dextrose agar from the primary infection spots (PAVGI and UPADHYAY 1964). Inoculations on well isolated healthy plants using the culture suspended in sterile distilled water incited numerous small creamy spots after 8 to 12 days.…”
