Development of Genomic Resources and Identification of Genetic Diversity and Genetic Structure of the Domestic Bactrian Camel in China by RAD Sequencing

Abstract: The domestic Bactrian camel is indispensable to agricultural production in the desertification area of China owning to its endurance to hunger and thirst, cold resistance, drought resistance, and good long-distance transportation. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and genes with important roles in the evolution of this species. In this study, 1,568,087 SNPs were identified in 47 domestic Bactrian camels inhabiting four regions of China, namely Inner Mongolia, G… Show more

“…The genetics plays an important role in the conservation of camels. Genetic information can be used to understand the diversity, population structure, and evolutionary history of camel populations, which can inform conservation efforts (Liu et al, 2020). It is essential to conserve camel for the maintenance of genetic diversity within populations.…”

“…Bactrian camels are mainly found in China's Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, and Gansu provinces (Ming et al 2017). With the development of transportation, the decline in camel use as a mode of transportation, and the influence of several factors, including the environment and the business system, the number of Bactrian camels in China decreased from 618,600 in 1981 to 380,000 in 2020 (Liu et al 2020) The reproductive organs of dromedaries and Bactrian camels are very similar to one another in their anatomy and physiology in several ways (Hafez and Hafez 2001). male camels have oval-shaped testicles that are placed in the scrotum at the perineum (Mukasa-Mugerwa 1981).…”
