Development of Functional Polymer as Oil-Well Cement Retarder

Abstract: In this study, a novel polymer retarder DRH-200LG was synthesized to solve the problems of retarding failure, strong dispersivity under high temperature and adverse impact on the strength development of cement stone. The composition of the polymer was confirmed by IR, and its thermal stability was proved by DSC, TG analysis and thermal treatment at 200 °C. Furthermore, the stability and strength development of cement slurry was evaluated by the comparative consistency method and ultrasonic method, respectively… Show more

“…Furthermore, it could be also prolonged by increasing the PIADH amount for higher temperature OWC. Figure exhibited the thickening curves of slurry with 3.5% PIADH measured at 180 °C and 100 MPa, showing that the TT was high up to 323 min and there was no abnormal phenomenon such as “flash set.” Moreover, the cement consistency was relatively stable, indicating that it had little influence on the sedimental stability of slurry under high temperature and high pressure, responsible for its superior polymer structure …”

“…However, it is still too sensitive to concentration at low temperature. Therefore, it is desirable to develop retarders that can regulate the TT of the cement slurry over a wide temperature range without affecting the strength development during setting of cement at low temperatures, and ensure the retarder being insensitive to concentration at the design temperature …”

“…In the early of 1960's, the importance of the surface of the pipes, roughness and wettability, in the proper connection between cementcasing and cement-formation was revealed [8,9,21]. On the other hand, Wenger et al (1965) introduced a special mechanical device with the ability to connect to the casing in order to control the relevancy between the layers [10]. Stone and Christina developed a laboratory scale model demonstrating the fact that if the cement hydrostatic pressure after initial setting time was less than the gas pressure, the gas migration phenomenon will continue.…”
