Development of durable shrink-resist coating of wool with sol-gel polymer processing

Abstract: Knitted wool fabric was pre-treated with the serine type protease, Esperase 8.0L (EC3.4.21.62), and sodium sulphite followed by an immersion treatment with a sol-gel hybrid polymer. To enhance the durability of the sol-gel treatment on wool, one of two different alkoxysilane containing coupling epoxy or mercapto groups were added to the sol-gel hybrid. The combination of protease treatment with an immersion sol-gel treatment achieved wool fabric that was lightweight with a soft handle and had combined shrink-r… Show more

“…The two amino side group-containing trialkoxysilane provides better shrink proofing, however, the amino and alkoxy group had a significant influence on the shrink proofing finish. Shen et al [164] produced the durable shrink-resist wool with silane containing 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS). In a sol-gel hybrid, epoxy or mercapto groups were added to enhance the durability.…”

“…At present, many sustainable technologies for eco-friendly processes of wool shrinkproofing methods have been brought forward under the concept of environmental protection, including enzyme treatment [4], plasma processing [5], ozone gas processing [6], and processing with nano materials and so on [7]. The enzyme method is not only eco-friendly but also has mild conditions [8].…”

“…However, the enzyme activity and the homogeneity of the treatment are affected by the graft modification [23]. In addition, the method of polymer deposition with organics or resin has also been suggested to improve the tensile strength of the treated wool fiber [7]. However, the feeling of the wool becomes rough by the polymer deposition process.…”
