Development of drought severity–duration–frequency curves for identifying drought proneness in semi-arid regions

Abstract: It is possible to plan suitable measures to mitigate the ill effects of droughts if the severity, recurrence interval, and frequency of droughts can be estimated efficiently. The present study was conducted to assess the drought proneness of various districts of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat state (India) by developing the drought severity–duration–frequency (DSDF) curves using the Standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) using rainfall and temperature data of 40 years (1980–2019) of 36 st… Show more

“…The average temperature of Ningxia ranges from -10°C to 25°C. The region falls within the North Temperate Zone with a continental monsoon climate, and its capital city is Yinchuan (Pandya et al, 2023). The Yellow River flows through Ningxia.…”

“…The climate is subtropical and semi-arid, with an average annual rainfall of 945 mm and an average annual pan evaporation of 5.6 mm/day. It is characterized by hot and dry summers, fairly cold and dry winters, and moderate humidity throughout the year (Pandya et al, 2022;Pandya and Gontia, 2023;Rank et al, 2023). The region of the study primarily relies on groundwater as the main source of irrigation water in winter and summer seasons (Patel et al, 2014).…”

“…Additionally, Raposo et al (2023) proposed two frequently employed methods based on the run theory to characterize drought and investigate their development and recovery stages [10]. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the significance of probabilistic drought characterization, particularly in regions with limited water resources [11][12][13]. Aksoy et al (2021) introduced the concept of critical drought intensity-duration-frequency curves, which define drought in terms of return period, rather than relying solely on index-based intensity measures [11].…”
