Abstract:Dog-assisted interventions (DAI) are those that include specially trained dogs in human health services. Often, the training methods employed to train animals for DAI are transmitted between trainers, so the latest scientific research on dog learning and cognition is not always taken into account. The present work aims to evaluate the impact that the main theories on the evolution of the dog have had both in promoting different training methods and in the relevance of behavior in the evolution of the skills of… Show more
“…As a result, several different therapies have been created to address these issues. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an intervention used often and focuses on minimizing undesirable behaviors while simultaneously rewarding preferred behaviors (Acebes et al, 2022). Alternative forms of treatment include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), sometimes known as talk therapy, and training in social skills, both designed to enhance interpersonal communication and emotional control (Wood et al, 2021).…”
During the Coronavirus epidemic, this research aimed to evaluate the most prevalent behavioral issues encountered by students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) were filled out by a total of 150 students with ASD, ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old. The SCQ was used to evaluate the students' difficulties in social communication, and the SDQ was used to evaluate the students' levels of hyperactivity and impulsivity. These results underline the critical need for focused treatments to assist the social and emotional development of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during times of crisis, such as the Corona epidemic. We may assist in lessening the detrimental effect of the pandemic on the well-being and academic achievement of this vulnerable demographic if we proactively address the special demands and problems experienced by students with ASD.

“…The current guidelines of a minimum age requirement for CAI recognize that puppies may exhibit less predictable behavior, which poses an increased risk for bites, falls, or scratches. Some protocols advise clipping the dog's nails before every visit to avoid scratches (130,135). Additionally, it may be required to undertake behavior and temperament assessments using tests designed to simulate the circumstances of working environments prior to starting CAIs.…”
CAIs (canine-assisted interventions) include “canine-assisted therapy” in which a therapist sets client-oriented goals, 'canine-assisted activities' with recreational goals for clients, and 'canine-assisted education/learning' in which teachers or coaches create learning goals for students or clients. CAIs vary in nearly every way; their only common trait is the involvement of dogs to respond to human need. However, the benefits of involving dogs are highly dependent on the animal's health and behavior. A dog exhibiting negative behavior or an unwell dog might pose a risk, especially for CAI target groups, specifically individuals with immunosuppression, chronic illness, children, elderly, etc. Therefore, positive animal welfare as preventative medicine to avoid incidents or transmission of zoonosis is an attractive hypothesis, with implications for human and animal, health and well-being. This review aims to summarize the current published knowledge regarding different aspects of welfare in CAIs and to discuss their relevance in the light of health and safety in CAI participants. As method for this study, a literature search was conducted (2001–2022) using the Prisma method, describing issues of dog welfare as defined in the Welfare Quality® approach. This welfare assessment tool includes 4 categories related to behavior, health, management, and environment; it was, therefore, applicable to CAIs. Results indicate that dogs working in CAIs are required to cope with diverse variables that can jeopardize their welfare. In conclusion, we propose regular welfare assessments for dogs in CAIs, which would also protect the quality of the CAI sessions and the clients' safety and well-being.
