Development of Crossword Puzzles for Auditory Training

This study analyzes the utilization of online-based auditory training content by individuals aged 70 and above, who are the primary users of auditory training programs. Additionally, we explore effective methodologies for online-based auditory training programs by investigating the impact of differences in auditory training content on training outcomes. Two elderly individuals, one female and one male, wearing hearing aids, participated in this study. We assessed speech perception in noise at 5 dB SNR before and after auditory training. They completed a listening effort questionnaire and attended a total of 20 auditory training sessions over 7 weeks. During the training period, they maintained a “training diary” three times a week. We conducted interviews with the two audiologists who provided auditory training to objectively analyze the diary survey results. Both hearing aid users demonstrated improved speech perception in noise scores and reduced listening effort. The analysis of auditory training experiences categorized them into three types: ‘emotion-stimulating,’ ‘information-generating,’ and ‘participatory.’ These categories informed the development of strategies for online auditory training content, including: 1) personalized auditory training content using artificial intelligence, 2) integration of auditory training into senior education programs, and 3) creation of interactive online auditory rehabilitation content using bidirectional technology. The study emphasizes the need for continuous development of interactive content tailored to the demographic and lifestyle characteristics of the participants. In the context of online-based auditory training, individualized programs, such as group training and professional-led programs, are essential. Further studies are required to determine whether training outcomes can be enhanced through experience-based content.

Auditory Training in an Elderly Hearing Aid User Using Environmental Sounds, Stories and Questions: A Case Report

We have reported one case of improvement in word recognition score (WRS) and sentence recognition score (SRS) in an elderly hearing aid user who had difficulty in communicating with others even after having a hearing aid fitted. Six weeks of training was conducted using environmental sounds, stories, and questions. Auditory training was conducted twice a week in hearing aid fitting room and total training time in each session was 40 minutes, including checking hearing aids, pre-training counseling, auditory training, and post-training counseling. After three weeks of auditory training, the WRSs of the left and right ear with headphone were changed 28% to 48% and 28% to 40%, respectively. After six weeks of training, SRSs in the acoustic room were improved 47.5% to 77.5% with hearing aids on both sides. And the Korean version of profile of hearing aid benefit scores after six weeks of training were 15.3% for easy communication, 62.3% for background noise, 34.3% for aversiveness, and 50.0% for localization except reverberation situation. This study showed that an elderly hearing aid user has improved communication skills, despite the short period of training. In addition, various training tools and methods are required to ensure that the subject does not lose interest in auditory training, and if the duration and place for the auditory training are limited, a training application on a personal computer or smartphone may facilitate auditory training.

Development of Script-Based Auditory Training and Preliminary Evaluation of the Training Efficacy for Young Adults with Cochlear Implants

The purpose of the current study was to develop the script-based materials for auditory training and to investigate the effects of script-based auditory training for congenitally deaf young adults with cochlear implants (CIs). Methods: A total of eight scripts were developed based on the literature review and the survey for speech-language pathologists, adults with normal hearing (NH), and adults with CIs. For validation of the materials, words and sentences of auditory training tool were examined using the four-point Likert scale by 35 adults with NH, and words and sentences below 2 point were removed and replaced from the script. For evaluating the efficacy of the training, three adults with CIs attended the auditory training individually, two times per a week for 4 weeks. Their speech recognition skills and subjective communicative satisfaction were evaluated before and after auditory training, and analyzed using a onegroup pretest and posttest design. Results: Although there were not significant increases in the speech recognition scores at the word and sentence level, there were significant increases in the overall communicative satisfaction on the results of the questionnaire. Conclusion: The current study suggests that auditory training using the script-based materials is useful in improving overall communicative satisfaction for young CI users who have limited communication skills.
