“…There was no significant difference compared to the 150 cm shelters. These classic effects of stimulation of height growth of seedlings have been reported by many authors for many tree species and climates [19,20,23,24,26,[34][35][36][37][38]. Similar results were obtained for oak trees in the south of England [9], for walnut in the south of France [14], and for the argan tree after one growing season under nonlimiting water conditions [39].…”

“…For that reason perhaps there was a growth stimulation of both established GU for cork oak, which allows plant to profit the possible maximum from the available light, but only of the first GU for zeen oak. The increase in GU length accompanied by a decrease in the polycyclism rate observed in this study for cork oak confirms the results of Chaar et al [41] and Mechergui et al [37], who reported for the same species that GU length tends to be shorter as the polycyclism rate increases.…”

“…In addition, studies investigating the growth response of oak seedlings to either water stress or shade were often limited to height, diameter and biomass measurements [30,31,32,33]. However, like other oak species [34,35], zeen oak [36] and cork oak [37] have a typically rhythmic pattern of height growth. The study of the periodic height growth pattern of oak species allows the main stem to be divided on other morphological entities called the growth unit (GU) and gives useful information on this growth response characterization.…”

“…Relative growth in height and diameter for container stock with shelters agreed with the literature, whereby relative height growth was positively affected and relative diameter growth was negatively affected by shelters. Shelters have been shown to increase height growth and reduce diameter growth in Quercus species [44,49] due to alteration of above and belowground biomass allocation by protected seedlings. Seedlings in shelters allocate greater resources toward height growth, which reduces photosynthate available for root growth.…”
