Development of Combination-Type Self-Compacting Concrete and Evaluation Test Methods

Abstract: More than ten years have elapsed since Self-Compacting Concrete (abbreviated as SCC), which does not require consolidation, made its appearance. SCC has been applied in many construction projects, including ultra-large structures. To achieve excellent self-compactability in heavily reinforced areas, SCC should deform well under its own weight without segregation of ingredients. Therefore, research on SCC had been focused on improving both deformability and resistance to segregation. However, there was still no… Show more

“…e tests carried out on the fresh state of the two SCCs were the slump flow, L-box test, V-funnel, sieve stability, and bulk density tests as well as air content measurement. ese rheological tests were carried out after a nominal interval of 15 min following the first contact of water with cement in the SCCM and SCCL [3].…”

“…SCC is made from the same basic constituents as conventional concrete, but with the addition of high levels of superplasticizer (SP) admixtures in order to obtain high workability [1,2]. e self-compactabilty of SCC is defined as the capability of the concrete to be uniformly filled and compacted in the formwork corners by its self-weight without vibration during placement [3].…”

“…The literature describes many tests to characterize the segregation, including the sieve segregation index test, cylinder test, column test, ball test, pale test, etc. Shindoh and Matsuoka have evaluated self-compacting concrete test methods [9].…”

“…Cellulose water soluble polymers such as methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose and polyacrylamide are widely used in these admixtures. Further, many types of viscosity agents such as β-1.3 Glucan, Welann Gum, Diutan gum and polyglycol have been developed for use in self-compacting concrete (Shindo andMatsuoka, 2003, Sakata et al, 2003). These viscosity agents increase the viscosity of paste by the crosslinking of particles, or the increasing of viscosity of the solution, or a swelling of molecules.…”
