Development of C/C–SiC Brake Pads for High‐Performance Elevators

Abstract: Novel C/C–SiC materials have been developed for their use as brake pads for high‐speed elevators. Under dynamic and stationary conditions, these materials exhibit high thermal shock resistance, high coefficients of friction, and extremely low wear rates. In addition, it has been found that the SiC content of the C/C–SiC materials on the friction surface heavily influences the frictional behavior. Low‐cost materials based on short fiber reinforcement and on drastically reduced process times showed their high po… Show more

“…Using such a wide operational temperature range, combined with the excellent mechanical properties, C/C-SiC disks have opened up possibilities for their applications in high-speed and heavy-duty brake systems. 14,15 Investigations by the Ceramic Composite Aircraft Brake Consortium of USA indicated that C/C-SiC materials may be feasible as a next-generation aircraft brake material. 16 Nowadays, plenty of works have been performed for developing C/C-SiC aircraft brake disks.…”

“…For high braking performance, C/SiC brake materials are potential candidates for high-speed trains, automobiles, aircraft, and emergency brakes for elevators and cranes (Vaidyaraman,et al (3); Krenkel and Berndt (10); El-Hija, et al (13)). As a new brake material, C/SiC and conventional brake materials are generally paired in application.…”
