Development of Building CFD Model Design Process Based on BIM

Abstract: This paper proposes the design process of optimized building Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model based on Building Information Modelling (BIM). The proposed method consists of five-step processes: BIM data extraction, geometry simplification, grid optimization, attribute data matching, and finally, exporting a CFD case folder for OpenFOAM. Validation is performed to evaluate the improvement of the grid model and the accuracy of the simulation result. Validation is conducted for four indoor ventilation mod… Show more

“…Nonetheless, CityGML and BIM modelling is not compatible to directly integrate with the CFD environment, so there is a need to convert into CAD modelling [23], [37]. But, by performing this, although it is in the CAD environment, the building detailing is already following the building modelling standard and, because of the present CFD software, only supports the CAD building standard [49].…”

“…Nevertheless, the information of the SARS-CoV-2 virus needs to be included as it also has its own level of diffusivity without only focusing on the wind flow in the well-represented 3D space model. Meanwhile, Lee et al [23] studied the CFD simulation method by utilizing the BIM-based building model. The research begins with data extraction of a BIM model from an IFC file format, then moves on to simplifying the geometry of the created building model, grid optimization, and attribute data matching from the IFC data.…”

“…CFD simulates numerical analysis using the nonlinear differential equation, the Navier-stoke equation, as the governing equation and using the finite difference method. It is actively used in various fields, including mechanical, aerospace, chemical engineering, manufacturing, civil and architectural, and environmental fields [45][46][47][48][49]. In this study, a 3D grid was designed using a CFD commercial program (Fluent, Ver.…”

“…It is used to model and quantify airflow-related cases (including ventilation, infiltration and dispersion of the contaminants), and test the wind-built environment interactions through numerical analysis. It enables the analysis of various shapes and environmental conditions(Lee et al, 2021;Merin Abbas & Gürsel Dino, 2019). It constitutes an important tool to understand current airflow designs, to reveal present shortcomings for improved ventilation and energy performance in particular(Melendez, Reilly & Duran, 2021).…”
